Narrative
From ‘let me know when you arrive’, through ‘I know you have your family, but, if you need anything, I’m here’, to ‘if I ever have a daughter, I want her to be like you’. Friends’ social networks have always existed. Maybe not exactly in those words, and sometimes unnoticed, but they are everlastingly there, although fluctuating, as any other type of love.
The net made by safety pins represents the term ‘friend network’. Throughout history around the world, the safety pin has had many different names and purposes. All those points of view give this tiny object an incredible strength beyond that which is inherent. In Spanish, the word for it is imperdible, which means something that cannot be lost; it is strong, resilient, capable of fixing what is broken, provides safety, cures wounds, and it’s rigid and flexible at the same time. All that defines friendship as well.
The photos attached to the net symbolise the reality of people who, being unaware of it, are constantly influenced by their surroundings and end up being impregnated with different scents.
This artwork pays homage to all those friend networks that exist, that have existed, regardless of the gender, sexuality, expression, capabilities, background, physical aspect, those that enrich all aspects of life, that care, and that love. They know who they are.
Biography
Laura Gata is an emergent visual artist seeking to get immersed in the field of graphic design. She started studying History of Art, but decided to drop it and look for other paths that were more
convenient to express her artistic vocation.
She has a straightforward target: To express her gratitude with her artwork to all the artists that have helped her in her creative development. Laura usually works in local projects where she feels creatively recognised and identified with the social or identitarian purposes that are promoted.
