Narrative
Hodnett’s work explores ideas of the unseen, manifesting in the form of site-specific, light orientated installations. As part of her practice she draws on the ambiguous nature of visual perception, her own relationship with sight, and how light is captured into a physical image.
The abstract principles of painting, colour, scale and mark making, as well as the behaviours of the materials influence how the work is produced. In her most recent body of work, cellophane and paint with digital media, such as photography and film are combined with video projection mapping as a way of painting with light. Cellophane becomes a metaphorical device, representing the artists tinted view and perception of living abroad in Lisbon. Hodnett creates a conduit between reality and the unseen using the galleries upstairs architecture. The window becomes an abstracted lens to a fragmented yet framed perception of her experience of living in a new unknown space.
